Bought this a while back for my dog but of the reading something on the internet about how rawhide is made using Hydroperoxide bleach etc it shocked me I've chucked it straight into the bin

Response:

Hi Isabelle

Thanks for your review. I agree, the majority of rawhide is badly treated with many chemicals before it's ready to be sold: strong bleach, colours, preservatives and flavours. But not this rawhide, which is why it took us five years to source it before we stocked any at all.

Ours comes from Brazil, from a producer who processes the whole animal on the same site. Often, the carcass is removed from the hide, then the hide makes a long journey to another factory for making into rawhide. Then is needs quite a bit of bleaching and treating to make sure it's free from pathogens.

This rawhide is processed just next door, meaning that it can be treated with a mixture of water and a far weaker bleach solution. All this does is make sure it's safe to eat, a not uncommon practice, the same as is used to make our bagged salads we see in the supermarket. It's then cut, shaped and dried. That's it, no additives of any kind. So don't worry that our rawhide isn't safe to eat. It's perfectly fine.

Disappointing
Sunday, 14 May 2017  |

Three stars because of the healthy nature of the chew but I was expecting this to "last for ages" as one of the reviews said. My 7 month old lab pup polished this off over the course of an afternoon, in two sittings. I want a chew that will last her days and I thought this would be that chew.

Long lasting

My dogs didn't seem too interested with these when they arrived, but after I'd smeared a little peanut butter on them, they soon tucked in. They lasted ages and were thoroughly enjoyed.
